Within 30 yards and a couple days of where and when this photo was taken (in Montañita, Ecuador), my son Trevor and I were caught in a riptide and came pretty close to drowning. The water was neck deep and my foot was hooked on a rock, keeping me from being swept out. You lose your strength pretty quickly fighting off the power of the ocean, and I remembered thinking, "I can do this for about two more minutes". That's about the time I noticed some surfers getting in the water and we started yelling for help. They did.
